Welcome back to my blog! This week I needed to make a form about my project to give to the parents, so I can get permission to get pictures and videos of the kids. I want to make sure the parents have all the information needed to understand the point of my project.
Some drills I would like to do with the kids this week will consist of handstand forward roll and half turn drills. For the handstand forward roll drill I will use panels matts. The gymnast will place their hands on the floor and look at an object behind them to concentrate on holding the handstand, once they have held the handstand the next step is rolling. To make sure the roll is correct your shoulders need to hit the ground in a candlestick shape before tucking your legs. This drill should help with the issue of tucking your legs too soon. For the half turn drill I will need a hoola hoop. I will place the hoola hoop on the ground and the kids start with their good foot in front in preparation for the turn. Once that is done they will try the half turn and land with their bad foot in front, in the hoola hoop. I hope for this to fix the issue of stepping out behind, instead of infront. I will try both of these drill this wednesday. After trying the drills last night I found out both of them worked very well! The kids respond very well to both of them. I saw lots of improvement on the half-turns by not stepping behind them, the dot caused them to pay attention to place their foot in front. The handstand forward roll drill created good progress for making sure they don't roll to soon, which was a big problem in their routines. I plan to print out the permission slips for next week, so I can start sharing some more insight to the drills I have been doing.

Welcome to my first blog post. For this genius hour product I will be working on improving my coaching techniques. Check out my introduction post to get a better understanding of my overall goals.
This week I got the opportunity to coach bronze which I was very excited about. Bronze is the first level of USAG team, so it was a great opportunity to coach. I coached beam and floor this past Monday. The kids did their basic warm up then moved on to cartwheels and handstands. Some of the gymnast had trouble kicking all the way up to handstands, so a technique I had used when I was a gymnast was partner handstands. To do this the gymnast got a partner and kicked all the way up to handstands on beam. This helped them to feel a vertical handstand and then attempt this again by themselves. After doing 5 sets of 10 second handstands, most of the kids improved. One thing I learned from other coaches was having the gymnast do skills on a line perfectly then more to a high beam. I used this technique for the gymnast to work on cartwheels. Many of them would rotate their hips around the beam, rather than their head. A couple of the gymnast tried on the floor then moved to a higher beam and improved. On Wednesday I coached blue team girls which is pre team, so a lower level than bronze. On floor I had one girl in particular that was struggling on a back-bend kick over. I looked up some ideas on pintrest and it said to get a wedge mat, and kick-over at the top and slowly move down the mat. Once she got to the bottom of the mat I told her to try it on the floor and after a couple tries it worked. I was so proud of her because this is something she has been struggling with for a couple months. I was not able to get a video because we ran out of time at the end of practice, but will hopefully get one next week. Next week I hope to find some ways to help the girls remember their routines. Memorizing the routines seems to be a struggle for a lot of the gymnast, so if I could find a way for remembering the routines it would help them out a lot. Welcome to my blog page! For the next twelve weeks I will be working to improve my coaching techniques. I was a competitive gymnast for about four years when an injury caused me to give it up. Not being able to compete in the sport, I was asked to be a coach for beginner classes, and pre team. I work at Salem Gymnastics sport Center, and enjoy every minutes of it. Since I am very passionate about my job I am looking forward to working on my techniques to help out my girls.
My mentors will be Beth Morphis, and Jeff Devirtio. Both Beth and Jeff have been part of the gymnastics world for many years, and Jeff was even my coach when I started gymnastics. They both can help with my techniques for coaching. I expect to learn more ways to help the girls with their skills. I think it could be challenging due to the fact each gymnast has a preferred or different way of learning. Some resources I will use for inspiration I could use would be pinterest and youtube to find different stations to help gymnast with skills. Some parts of this project that could be difficult is relaying the corrections, and stations to the kids because some of them are on the younger side. This could cause some confusion, but I plan to handle this by visual learning and even getting some games involved. I will share with others through my blog. I will also use pictures and videos to show my progress and share my teaching with other coaches. I am excited to share my progress and getting to work on it for the next twelve weeks. |
